EIA Reports 8.6 Million bbl Weekly Draw in US Crude Inventories
US crude stocks fell 8.6 million bbl to 415.6 million bbl, 3% below the 5-year average, as refinery runs hit 93.5% and imports dropped to 6.0 million b/d, EIA data show.
Field notes
- US commercial crude inventories fell 8.6 million bbl for the week ended Oct. 9 to 415.6 million bbl, 3% below the 5-year average.
- Refinery crude inputs averaged 16.6 million b/d, with refineries running at 93.5% of capacity.
- Distillate inventories dropped 2.5 million bbl and sit 12% below the 5-year average.
- Crude imports fell 791,000 b/d to 6.0 million b/d.
- Total product supplied over 4 weeks averaged 21.1 million b/d, up 2.0% year over year.

US commercial crude inventories fell 8.6 million bbl for the week ended Oct. 9, landing at 415.6 million bbl — 3% below the 5-year average for this time of year, according to the US Energy Information Administration. It's one of the larger weekly draws in recent months, and it arrived a day late: the federal government closure on Monday, Oct. 12, pushed the report back from its usual Wednesday slot.
The crude number gets the headline, but the detail underneath tells a more mixed story. Refiners were running hard, imports dropped sharply, and product stocks moved in opposite directions.
What drove the 8.6 million bbl draw?
Two forces worked together to pull crude out of storage. First, refinery crude inputs rose to an average of 16.6 million b/d, up 135,000 b/d from the previous week, with refineries operating at 93.5% of capacity. Second, crude imports fell 791,000 b/d to 6.0 million b/d, tightening the supply cushion.
The 4-week import average of 6.1 million b/d still sits 0.9% above year-ago levels, so the weekly drop may prove temporary. For now, though, strong runs and lighter arrivals did the work.
Takeaway: high refinery utilization plus a steep import drop drained crude stocks faster than seasonal norms.
How did product stocks move?
The product picture split cleanly:
- Gasoline inventories rose 3.5 million bbl, now 4% below the 5-year average, as production averaged 9.2 million b/d.
- Distillate inventories fell 2.5 million bbl, now 12% below the 5-year average, with production slipping to 5.2 million b/d.
- Propane-propylene stocks dropped 1.5 million bbl, still 15% above the 5-year average.
- Total commercial petroleum inventories fell 13.4 million bbl on the week.
The distillate deficit is the number to watch heading into heating season. A 12% shortfall against the 5-year average, with output trending down, keeps pressure on diesel margins even as gasoline builds.
Takeaway: distillate is the tight spot — gasoline built while diesel stocks fell further below normal.
What does demand look like?
Over the past four weeks, total product supplied averaged 21.1 million b/d, up 2.0% year over year. Jet fuel led the gainers, with its 4-week average up 2.3%.
The road fuels were flatter. Gasoline product supplied averaged 8.7 million b/d over four weeks, down 0.4% year over year, while distillate product supplied slipped 0.2% to 4.0 million b/d.
On the import side, gasoline arrivals averaged 508,000 b/d and distillate imports 145,000 b/d for the week — modest relief for the distillate balance, but not enough to offset the stock draw.
Takeaway: overall demand is running ahead of last year, carried by jet fuel while gasoline and diesel hold roughly flat.
What's the watch item?
The next weekly EIA report, back on its normal schedule, will show whether the import drop was a blip and whether distillate stocks keep sliding toward a deeper seasonal deficit. That distillate margin is the number to watch.
