YPF Adds Second Archer Rig in Vaca Muerta Under $110 Million Deal
YPF signed a $100-110 million, three-year contract with Archer adding the DLS-160 rig in Vaca Muerta, as Wood Mackenzie forecasts 1 million b/d of oil from the play by 2030.
Field notes
- YPF let a 3-year rig contract with Archer valued at $100-110 million, including optional 2-year extension.
- The contract adds the DLS-160 rig and continues deployment of the DLS-163 in Vaca Muerta.
- Wood Mackenzie projects Vaca Muerta oil production of 1 million b/d by 2030.
- Gas production is projected to exceed 7 bcfd post-2030, driven largely by associated gas.

YPF has signed a second long-term rig contract with Archer worth an estimated $100-110 million, adding a second drilling unit to its Vaca Muerta shale program in Argentina.
The three-year agreement, which carries an option for a two-year extension, brings the DLS-160 rig into Archer's operations in the Neuquén Basin play and locks in continued deployment of the DLS-163 rig, Archer said. The DLS-163 has been supporting YPF's ongoing development drilling in the basin.
For a company that has spent a decade learning how to drill the Vaca Muerta's tight oil windows economically, another rig under long-term contract is a signal of steadiness rather than a sprint. YPF is not testing the play anymore. It is building it out.
What does the contract cover?
The deal expands Archer's operating fleet in the region. Key terms include:
- A three-year base term with a two-year optional extension.
- Addition of the DLS-160 rig to Archer's Vaca Muerta operations.
- Continued deployment of the DLS-163 rig for YPF's ongoing development activities.
- An estimated contract value of $100-110 million over the full term, including the optional extension years, according to Archer.
That value range covers the whole potential five-year life of the contract, so the annualized figure sits in the neighborhood of $20-22 million depending on how the option plays out.
The takeaway: YPF is putting drilling capacity under multiyear lock rather than shopping the spot market, which tells you the development program has a horizon measured in years, not wells.
Can Vaca Muerta actually reach 1 million b/d?
The rig commitment lands against a bullish backdrop for the play. Argentina's Vaca Muerta is on track to reach oil production of 1 million b/d by 2030 through infrastructure buildout, capital deployment, and operational learnings, according to a report by Wood Mackenzie.
Oil production is projected to grow quickly, led by YPF and core operators across key development areas. On the gas side, Wood Mackenzie projects output exceeding 7 bcfd after 2030, with associated gas from oil-focused drilling as a major contributor to incremental supply.
Those numbers belong to Wood Mackenzie, not to YPF, and forecasts of this kind carry the usual weight of assumptions about takeaway capacity, capital discipline, and macro conditions. Still, the forecast and the rig contract point the same direction: operators are sanctioning activity on the expectation that the growth curve holds.
The takeaway: an consultancy forecast is analysis, but a signed three-year rig contract is capital already committed — and the two now agree on where Vaca Muerta is headed.
What happens next?
The watch items here are concrete. Watch for the DLS-160's mobilization timing and first spud in the basin, since that date will mark when the incremental capacity actually reaches formation. Watch also for whether YPF exercises the two-year extension — that decision will read as a referendum on whether the 1 million b/d trajectory is holding on schedule.
The gas number matters too. If associated gas volumes build as projected past 2030, Argentina's infrastructure picture — processing capacity, pipeline takeaway, export routes — becomes the binding constraint on the play's next leg.
For now, the drill bit count in Vaca Muerta is going up, under contract, for years.
